The Boy and the Butterfly

A. H. Tammsaare writing contest for children

January 30, 2003 is the 125th anniversary of the birth of the prominent Estonian writer Anton Hansen Tammsaare. On this occasion, the international Finno-Ugric newspaper Kudo+Kodu opens a new column by the name The Boy and the Butterfly (after Tammsaare's novelette). Literary texts on any theme by the youngest of authors (under 16 by age) will be published in the column.

The works submitted will be appraised by a jury composed of writers and poets representing the various Finno-Ugrian countries and peoples. Poetry and prose will be appraised separately.

The results of the contest will be announced by the end of 2002. The winner of the contest will be given the opportunity to participate in a celebration dedicated to Tammsaare's anniversary in Estonia at the end of 2002. Numerous smaller prizes await other outstanding works submitted.

To participate in the contest, please submit your work with the note "for the contest The Boy and the Butterfly". The original as well as a literary translation into either Russian or English of the poem or the prose work must be provided. We also expect a few sentences about the author and his/her photograph. Electronic submissions of the text, illustrative materials and the author's photo are encouraged.

The participant or his/her parents must be subscribers of Kudo+Kodu. Kudo+Kodu is included in the Russian Federation directory ROSPECHAT and it is possible to subscribe to Kudo+Kodu from any part of the Russian Federation at any time. Participants resident in other nations can subscribe only in Finland and Estonia.
